The book was an instant success, and is the sole work the author's reputation is resting on. Inspired by the Greek Anthology and the author's childhood memories from small towns in Illinois, Spoon River Anthology consists of over 200 verse epitaphs, being confessions by men and women buried in a midwestern town cemetery.
